In 2017, BeyGOOD teamed up with UNICEF to launch BEYGOOD 4 BURUNDI, a multi-year partnership to provide safe water to the most vulnerable children in Burundi. The partnership supported programs to improve water, sanitation, and basic hygiene practices in the hardest-to-reach areas of the landlocked East African nation.
“Access to water is a fundamental right. When you give children clean and safe water, you don’t just give them life, you give them health, an education, and a brighter future. I am committed to helping drive lasting solutions to the water crisis in Burundi,” said Mrs. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
As a result of #BEYGOOD4BURUNDI:
- 108,000 people gained access to a sustainable source of safe water
- 136 water points were constructed or rehabilitated
- 161 new Water Point Management Committees (WPMC) were established
- 630 WPMC members were trained
- 40 local plumbers were trained on water infrastructure technology
- 36 community leaders were trained on how to conduct community hygiene promotion activities
- 71,997 people benefitted from hygiene education, mobilization and information sessions
- 126 committees composed of school administration representatives, community members and students from hygiene clubs were established and trained on key family hygiene practices
- Officials and hygiene clubs at 10 schools engaged in capacity building on hygiene, including menstrual hygiene management
- 2,000 reusable sanitary pads were distributed to vulnerable women and adolescent girls
